Ideas for handwriting lessons
- Write the letter/word on a friends back, individual whiteboards, in chalk on concrete, in the sky using finger etc. always ensuring to start in the right spot.
- Use spelling word list in handwriting lesson.
- Use long date at top of page for handwriting for that day to reinforce spelling of days of the week, months of the year and format for ordinal numbers.
- Use ipad handwriting apps especially for children who have difficulty holding a pencil or have trouble with engagement.
- Use tongue twisters or sentences using alliteration. To find more Google 'tongue twisters' and the letter or combination of letters being used for the lesson. Alternatively have children make up their own. Some examples:
- Around the rugged rocks the ragged rascal ran.
- The big bug bit the little beetle, but the little beetle bit the big bug back.
- Big ben blew big blue bubbles.
- Crisp crusts crackle crunchily.
- Chester Cheetah chews a chunk of cheep cheddar cheese.
- Do drop in at the Dewdrop Inn.
- Each Easter Eddie eats eighty Easter eggs
- Five fuzzy French frogs Frolicked through the fields in France.
- Great glass globes gleam green
- Eleven owls licked eleven little liquorice lollipops.
- A dozen double Damask dinner napkins.
- Sam's shop stocks short spotted socks.
- A tidy tiger tied a tie tighter to tidy her tiny tail.
- If two witches were watching two watches, which witch would watch which watch?
- Zebras zig and zebras zag
