Alliera Carroll~ visible learning
from Alliera:
Our school is a Visible Learning school. All classrooms have Bump it Up Walls and use learning goals and success criteria each lesson. In my own classroom I have a whiteboard which I've divided into sections. I explain the learning intention (WALT), success criteria (WILF) and reason (TIB) to students for everything they do. Data collection has shown a need for students in the class to focus on text structure. Therefore our class goal is text structure. I have all students names next to either level 1, 2, 3 or 4 and they can see how they can bump thenselves up. I also have a WAGOLL wall displayed with student work samples based around these levels so students can see what is classed as a 1 and what they'd need to do to achieve a level 4. Students refer to this during the writing process. |
Students all have personal goals for writing and maths. I use 'I can statements' to see what students need to focus on. Students have their learning goals on the wall and a plane name tag. They then have to show me 4 work samples to achieve that goal. When they have shown one work samples that achieves their goal they move to flying on our wall and get it stamped off on their individual sheet, 2 samples students are flying high, 3 samples they are flying higher, and 4 samples they have landed at their destination and achieved their goal. Once they have landed that goal students stick their in their passport booklets and start working n their next goal. Students then get to do an activity based around the country they've landed in. For example if visiting Mexico they could wear a Mexican hat etc (I got this idea from another wonderful teacher at our school). All students goals for each cluster are in their books so they know what they need to do in order to achieve that whole cluster (this could take up to a year as markers are broken right down). This is easy when entering data on PLAN.
I am in the process of breaking down the 'I can statements' even further and providing examples of what a student can do to achieve each marker so that students can understand this whole process even better.
Genius hour is one hour a week where students can work on their personal goals. Students need to ensure their goal makes their brain sweat. Goals need to be written using the ISMART process. This time gives students the opportunity to bring out their 'inner genius'.
Feedback :students are right into giving and receiving feedback. They do this by giving peers 2 stars and a wish and by filling out exit slips to leave the room .
I hope this helps you get a better understanding of Visible Learning
