"At my school last year we introduced problem of the day K-6. There was a problem for everyday. Monday was modelled by the teacher, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday there was less modelling and more student involvement. On Friday the children did it independently. At first they used whiteboards to record then we moved to recording in their maths books. They recorded on a double page with the question stuck on the left and their picture on the right. By the end of the year the students were showing their answers in multiple ways ie picture and number sentence. We discussed things as how to solve a problem, looking for the question and the statement. The students could tell you which was which and why. We also looked at the words and what they meant. It was actually a really worthwhile activity each day as it got the students talking about their maths, interacting with their peers and discussing their learning. I made them on a Notebook file and on a Friday I used to write the name of the students who got it right independently. This then became my assessment. I made them for the whole year. The publisher files are the questions for the independent activity. I used to photocopy each week in a different colour and then they would stick it in their book. " |
